STOCKTON — The offense finally came together for Sierra High.

At Thursday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Softball Championships, the Timberwolves (16-4-1) collected 18 hits in the two games played at Arnaiz Stadium, beating Vista del Lago of Folsom 7-4 and Valley Oak League rival Kimball, 7-5.

They’ll face highly-touted Oakdale today at 5 p.m.

The VOL champion Mustangs rolled past Central Catholic, 10-0, and Ceres, 11-0.

“But this is a new season,” Sierra coach Nick Olmo said of the postseason. “Everyone has 0-0 record right now.”

Oakdale swept the Timberwolves in league play.

“This will be our third meeting (against the Mustangs) and I’m looking forward to this game,” said Sierra ace hurler Ally Walljasper, who was also celebrating her 16th birthday.

“Softball is the game,” she added. “I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my birthday.”

Against Vista del Lago, the Timberwolves rallied for three runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the seventh in the opener against the Eagles.

The defending section champs took advantage of some wildness by Vista del Lago - Sommer Wilson and Katelynn Perkins were both plucked by pitches - by scoring a pair of unearned runs. Gabby Olmo singled and came home on Elena Flores’ RBI single.

Prior to that, Sierra trailed 2-1, with the Eagles taking the lead on Tayana Mata’s solo home run that barely cleared the 195-foot fence in the wind-swept right field.

The Timberwolves opened the scoring in the first inning as Katelyn Salsedo had a one-out hit and subsequently scored on Perkins’ double to right.

Vista del Lago evened the game at 1-1 in the second inning, scoring on an unearned run.

Ahead 4-2, Sierra opened the seventh on another double by Perkins, who scored on Olmo’s single. Two batters later, Brianne Lenoci plated Olmo with a triple. She reached home on a wild pitch.

The Eagles added a run in the bottom half of the seventh. But Perkins’ nifty catch in right helped squash any comeback hopes by Vista del Lago.

Walljasper scattered seven hits with eight strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Timberwolves wasted little time getting their offense untracked against Kimball.

In the opening frame, they scored three runs on three hits and an error while sending nine batters to the plate.

Iyana Hughes led off with a single, Salsedo reached on an error, and Walljasper ripped an RBI single down the third-base line, plating Salsedo. The speedy Hughes scored before that on a wild pitch.

Wilson, who was hit by a pitch, was delivered home on Taylor Moss’ single.

Perkins led off the third with a double to left. She scored on a sacrifice by Moss.

Hughes, who was 3 for 4 at the plate, opened the fourth inning with a single, stealing second and scoring on Wilson’s sacrifice fly to right.

Sierra made it 7-1 in the fifth, putting together two runs on four straight singles during the two-out rally. Moss, Lenoci, and Hughes had singles, setting up Salsedo’s bases-loaded, two-run single.

Kimball scored twice in bottom half of the frame, taking advantage of a pair of hits and two errors.

Walljasper, who also pitched the second game, registered two of her eight strikeouts to open the seventh. But Kimball made the game interesting, scratching out two runs on three hits and an error.

But Walljasper ended the threat with a strikeout.

Like Hughes, Moss enjoyed a multiple-hit game, collecting two hits.
