HILMAR - This summer there will be plenty of fun on tap for the whole family at Hilmar Cheese Company’s visitors’ center.

Aside from being the only place you can obtain Hilmar Cheese label gourmet cheeses, the visitors’ center offers a variety of activities for both young and old.

“It’s really a fun place to visit if you’re looking for something to do with the kids this summer, or if you’re traveling down Highway 99 and want to swing by,” said Hilmar Cheese Director of Education Denise Skidmore.

The highlight of the activities is undoubtedly the Family Fun Tour and Ice Cream Activity, which runs from June 4 to Aug. 31 at 11 a.m., Monday through Friday. Children can take a tour followed by the ice cream activity where they can create and eat their own creamy creations. Nothing beats straight from the cow ice cream. The tour consists of a video from Daisy the Cow, then children can dress up like a cheese maker, veterinarian or farmer. From that point on children can explore hands on games and displays, as well as watch as Hilmar Cheese workers load and package 640-pound vats of cheese. The tour and activity costs $3 per participant.

Weekend public tours are also available on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and free self-guided tours are available anytime between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The visitors’ center will offer a chicken barbecue lunch on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Fridays a smoked tri-tip sandwich will be available. Both meals, which come will all the fixings and side dishes costs $9.

Hilmar Cheese is located just four-miles off Highway 99 on Lander Avenue in Hilmar.
