Shakira Lewis of Sierra High is the Manteca area’s lone qualifier for today’s CIF State Track & Field Championships in Clovis.

POSTED June 1, 2012 1:04 a.m.

Shakira Lewis has at least one more race to run in her first and only season as a track athlete for Sierra High.

The senior speedster will compete in the 94th California Interscholastic Federation State Track & Field Championships tonight at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis. The girls 100-meter preliminary heats are scheduled to begin at 7:05.

Lewis, previously a softball player at Sierra, enters the trial round as the 25th-seeded runner out of 27 qualifiers. Her time of 12.57 seconds was good for third place at last week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Finals at Elk Grove High but came with a headwind reading of 2.2 meters per second. Lewis’ personal record of 12.06 seconds, clocked during the Valley Oak League Championships, would have her seeded 11th.

Long Beach Poly sophomore Ariana Washington checks in with the fastest seeded time of 11.61 followed by El Camino senior Jasmine Gibbs’ 11.71.  Gibbs placed fifth in last year’s 100-meter final. Only eight entrants boast seeded times faster than 12 flat.

The three heat winners and six next best times advance to Saturday’s final race scheduled for 7:31.

Lewis is just the second female from Sierra to qualify for the state meet. Sierra discus thrower Bret Wilson and East Union pole vaulter Jerrica Hauck qualified as first alternates.
