The Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant in the 400 block of North Main Street has been cited as one of the top 100 restaurants in Chinese cuisine in the country.  Bob and Elaine Chen received their plaque and trophy of recognition at a Las Vegas Hotel.

The Chens have raised three children at their eatery in the last 18 years.  Sons Wilson, 21, and Jason, 19, still work cooking in the restaurant on the weekends.

Daughter Cindy, 37, graduated from the UOP School of Pharmacy 11 years ago and now works in the Kaiser pharmacy in Livermore.  Son Wilson is in his third year at UOP, also studying to be a pharmacist.  He graduated from Sierra High School and received a scholarship to attend UOP.

Jason, 19, is attending Delta College majoring in accounting and business.  “But, he’s a good cook,” his mother added.  “When we opened my youngest was only 1 and the other was 3,” she said.  Their daughter was 18 at the time.

The Hong Kong is a delightful surprise when you walk through its front door.—not only with their interior but with their service and hospitality.   They can serve up to 70 to 80 customers and boast a family party room as well.

MAINZ CLEANERS’ WNERS WATCH DAUGHTERS EXCEL
When taking our cleaning into Mainz Cleaners over the years at their place on North Main Street, it has always been fun keeping up on the educational progress of their daughters.  Jongchol and Young Hye Han have served Mantecans for the last 16 years.

Their oldest daughter Boram, now 27, graduated from Carlton College in Minnesota where she majored in Political Science and Photography as a double major.  She now works for the Follett Higher Education Group as project manager in Oakbrook, Ill.

Younger daughter Aram is 22 and a recent grad from U.C. Berkeley where she double majored in Latin-American History and Art.  She speaks Portuguese, Korean, Spanish and, of course, English.

TIPTON’S STATIONERY QUIET SOURCE FOR FATHERS’ DAY GIFTS
It was a world globe that caught my eye as a Fathers’ Day gift at Tipton’s Stationery on West Yosemite Avenue.  It might be a dated item for the younger set , but with as much going on around the world today I can see it as a fun resource for most any dad setting it next to the computer.

Also of the many things I have purchased there that might not have been in stock, I have never had to wait longer than the next morning to pick something up.  From a computer printer to a paper shredder that came from their catalog – there was actually no waiting time at all.

I have always taken a back step when a clerk would say we don’t have that particular item but we can order it.  With Tipton’s office supplies the response is usually, “We can have it for you in the morning.”

FATHER AND SON GOING TO WORK TOGETHER IN AIR CONDIDITIONING
Mark Souza and his son Mark have joined forces to work together in dad’s air conditioning and heating business in Manteca.  The younger Mark at 25 has worked for other AC firms in addition to serving in the U.S. Army overseas.

Mark Sr. has 23 years in the air conditioning trade behind him as he welcomes his son to join in what promises to be a new experience in family for both of them.
