Andrew Bonner bust on the golf scene as a freshman for Ripon High.
Now at Central Catholic, Bonner’s game is still dominant. He outlasted East Union standout Will Brink with a two-day score of 141, carding an impressive 8-under-par round 63 for the Tokay Junior Golf Tournament championship at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club Thursday.
Bonner joins a list of Tokay Junior winners that include current PGA Tour pros Matt Bettencourt, Ricky Barnes, Spencer Levin, Zack Miller and former PGA Tour champion and Manteca native Kevin Wentworth.
Bonner closed the deal in grand fashion, shooting a pedestrian 3-over-par 74 Wednesday before putting together a four-birdie front nine on his way to a 31. Bonner didn’t slow up posting another three birdies on the back nine including a birdie on 18 to finish the round.
Brink followed up his 1-over-par 72 on day one with a 2-under-par 69. Brink finished the front nine with a 36 before posting three birdies on the first four holes of the back nine. Brink would give on stroke back, finishing second four strokes off Bonner.
Bonner is coming off a second-place finish in the Stockton Golf and Country Club Junior Classic, closing the one-day tourney with a 74 and tied for second place.
Ten-year-old Manteca resident Ty Griggs earned a third-place finish in the tourney, following up his day one round of 46 with a 43. Griggs posted his first birdie of the tournament, finishing the 348-yard par-4 hole No. 4 in three shots. Griggs came in behind Brian Stark (80) and Cooper Hunt (86) as the only players to finish in the 80s.
