Milo Candini and Walker Vick will be the first two Mantecans inducted to the Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Fame.

The 2012 class includes some of the top athletes, coaches, administrators, officials and media members to come out of the SJS since the 1920s. The section welcomed the first 56 Hall of Famers in its inaugural induction in 2010.

Candini and Vick will be among the 43-member 2012 group that will be inducted on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Power Balance Pavilion,

Candini was a four-sport standout (football, basketball, baseball, track and field) at Manteca High in the 1930s. He is a two-time CalHiSports medium schools Athlete of the Year (1934, 1935) and was twice named the CalHiSports medium schools Player of the Year for baseball (1935, 1936).

It was on the baseball diamond where he truly shined. Candini signed to play for the New York Yankees after high school and went on to enjoy an eight-year career in the big leagues with the Washington Senators and Philadelphia Phillies.

Candini is part of the 1994 class of the Manteca Hall of Fame and died at the age of 80 on March 17, 1998. The city would later honor Candini by naming the road — Milo Candini Drive — that runs by the Big League Dreams sports complex in town.

Vick served as athletic director for 27 out of the 41 years he was at Manteca High, where he was also a teacher and coach. In 1989, Vick was named the state and western regional Athletic Director of the Year.

He coached the varsity football squad from 1969-1980, compiling a 76-42-4 record. Vick was the school’s all-time winningest football coach until current coach Eric Reis surpassed him in 2010.

Vick, whose name graces Manteca High’s fieldhouse, currently works for the SJS office as an award coordinator.
