GALT – There are flea markets.

And then there’s the weekly, two-day Galt Market that sets the regional standard for both bargain hunting and buying in bulk.

With one day open to commercial buyers looking to score a deal on a large-scale purchase and the other open to regular vendors hoping to unload some of the things that they’ve accumulated, it isn’t uncommon for thousands of curious shoppers to work their way down the rows in a given week.

The fact that it’s free and it’s sponsored by the City of Galt only adds another dimension of quality and security to the experience.

Held every Tuesday and Wednesday, the Galt Market traces its roots back to the farmer’s market at the old Sacramento County Fairgrounds in the 1950’s and has since been transformed into more of an open-air mall than a standard flea market.

The recent addition of a produce and garage sale aisle only enhances the offerings and provides something that local residents can take advantage of on a weekly basis.

And it doesn’t hurt that they have an assortment of nearly everything for sale.

Here’s a brief sample:

• Watches and Jewelry – With wholesale vendors offering brands like Citizen and Seiko, it’s easy to find something of quality and a reduced price. Necklaces and other jewelry pieces can also be found.

• Toys – Some might be for sale by a regular vendor with other items they’re looking to unload and some might be for sale by a vendor that specializes in only toys, but picking up something special for kids has never been so affordable.

• Tools and knives – Complete tool sets – with an assortment of sockets, drivers, extenders and wrenches – are common as are brand name tools that can be picked up individually. Knives that range from folding pocket knives to spring-assist pocket clips are also popular sale items.

• Electronics – Speakers for both your home and car can be found easily on Tuesdays while phones, radios and other accessories are big sellers on both days of the market. It isn’t uncommon to see somebody with an assortment of all for sale.
