Eight cars were reported stolen late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning – one that was being warmed up while the owner went back into the residence to get a cup of coffee, police said.

Manteca Police officer John Moody said through his past experience the Hondas had probably already been stripped or burned and the KIA was most likely being used for transportation.  Moody formerly served on the DELTARAT auto theft recovery team led by the CHP.

Of the cars that disappeared only one was recovered as of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.  Stockton Police located the Ford F-150 that was taken from the 1600 block of Star Tulip Street.

The KIA Sorento that was being warmed up outside a residence in the 500 block of Elm Avenue was a 2006 model.

The other vehicles included a 1988 Honda that was taken from the 100 block of Northgate Drive, a 1996 Honda taken from the 1900 block of Crutchfield Lane, a 1989 Honda Civic taken from the 1000 block of Winters Drive, a 1990 Acura taken from the 1900 block of Bolton, a 1997 Saturn that disappeared overnight from the 900 block of Pebble Way and a 1990 Honda Civic taken from the 10,000 block of Mellon Avenue in Manteca’s industrial park area.

Manteca Police continue to urge citizens to use a “Club” on their steering wheels – especially at night – to prevent their vehicles from being stolen.

The surge in car thefts bucks the trend of declining vehicle thefts since 2004 when they peaked at 798. There were 106 vehicle thefts in 2009 through April of this year compared to 116 last year during the same time period.
