Sierra High’s girls 100-meter dash record is safe thanks to the blustery conditions during the 53rd Annual Golden West Invitational.
That’s all right to Shakira Lewis. Either way, the record is hers.
She blazed to a time of 11.72 seconds at Folsom High, taking fifth overall in the process. Arizona state champion Ky Westbrook won it in 11.42 seconds and also claimed the 200 in 23.75.
With a tailwind reading of 7.7 meters per second, Lewis’ mark does not stand as the new school record. Record times aided by tailwinds exceeding 2.0 are not registered.
Still, it’s an impressive time for Lewis, a recent graduate of Sierra who wrapped up her first, and perhaps only, season of track. She placed eighth in the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships on June 2. It was there that set her school record of 11.91 in the preliminaries.
Lewis also competed in the 200 Saturday, clocking a wind-aided time of 25.67 to finish fourth in her heat and ninth overall. She owns the school’s 200 record (25.83) as well.
