The second annual Manteca City Little League Tournament’s minor division finale pitted two squads from the same organization.
No matter what, bragging rights were going to stay with Manteca Little League for a second straight year.
The 9-10 year-old A’s upset their league rival Giants 12-10 at Brock Elliot School Monday for the city crown. The Giants, however, will be representing Manteca Little League in the District 67 Tournament of Champions starting this Saturday.
The minor division tournament started 17 teams last Tuesday, June 5 — six from Manteca, seven from Northgate and four from Spreckels Park.
In the minor championship, the Giants had two in scoring position with the game-winning run at the plate with two strikes and the count full. Winning pitcher Tyler Kiser came through with the clutch strikeout to clinch the win for the A’s.
Kiser, batting from the cleanup spot, was also the A’s top hitter, going 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBIs.
The Giants busted out with a five-run first inning, but in the bottom half the A’s were quick to tie. Iziah Prien-Laurant crushed a two-run triple and evened the score when Trenton Oneto drove him in with a single.
Nate Schatmeier put the Giants back up with a two-RBI double in the third inning, and Wyatt Nichelson sent him home with a single to make it 8-5.
The A’s scratched across two runs in the bottom of the third and took advantage of seven walks and a hit batter to take the lead for good in the fourth, 12-8.
Tyler Garlets scored three times for the A’s. Zak McCascand drew three walks, plated two runs and drove in another. Vince Hernandez finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run.
Pili Hines paced the Giants with three runs scored. Jacob deJesus was 2 for 2 with a double and two runs.
