LATHROP – Lathrop Little League’s Major Pirates battled for every out of their season-ending 11-4 loss to the Spreckels Park Angels Wednesday in the District 67 Major Tournament of Champions at Mossdale Landing Community Park.

Lathrop asserted themselves early, getting a two-run home run from David Reyes (a pool-player added to an incomplete Lathrop roster) and stirring up the Spreckels Park coaching staff, which put the game under protest after the second-inning shot. The Angels would answer immediately, tacking five on the scoreboard, with the big-hit coming from Sam Buxa’s two-run double.

The Angels would never relinquish the lead,  but Lathrop continued to keep the contest close, chipping away with a run from Marco Gueiara who came around to score after a double off the fence.

The Angels would get a pair of doubles from Dylan Heath and Hunter Frisk, with Frisk’s ground-rule double driving in two.

Craig Durao shook off the early homerun to give the Angels a good start, while Jared Bagley and Chase Sperbeck holding Lathrop in check in relief through the game’s final out. Lathrop would add their final run on a mammoth blast from first baseman Jacob Eijansantos, who smashed an offering deep in his final at bat of the season.

Spreckels Park will be back on the diamond Friday when they take on the Mountain House Giants in the loser’s bracket contest. Mountain House is coming off a victory over Weston Ranch in their second loser’s bracket win.

The Manteca Little League Giants and the Tracy National team will meet in the winner’s bracket contest also scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
