More than 3,200 PG&E customers in west Manteca were without power Tuesday when a driver lost control of his vehicle on Union Road near the golf course and knocked out several power poles.

The fact live lines came to rest atop the vehicle with the driver still inside required PG&E to de-energize power so the man could be safely removed.

PG&E spokesperson Nicole Liebelt noted PG&E crews were on the scene almost immediately. Due to the precarious situation, Leibelt said the utility crew’s first and foremost concern was getting the driver safely removed from the vehicle by cutting off electricity so emergency crews could get him to the hospital.

Fifty-five minutes after the accident, power was restored to 2,400 customers By 8:45 p.m., electricity was flowing to all but 88 of the remaining customers.

Leibelt noted it took several hours for the remaining customers to get power restored as crews had to put in place power roles.

The driver wasn’t seriously injured.
