LATHROP – Good teams find a way to win, and that trend continued for the Manteca Little League Giants. They continued their unblemished run in the District 67 Major Tournament of Champions with a 13-9 victory over Tracy National Thursday at Mossdale Park.

The Giants jumped out with a three-run first inning and a four spot in the second to build what looked like a comfortable lead. Tracy answered with a ferocious comeback that saw a 7-2 deficit turn into a 9-9 ball game heading into the final inning.

Nathan Vaught had the big hit for the Giants, connecting on a bases-clearing double to put the Giants up for good. Andrew Brunn came on in relief, getting the game’s final three outs and keeping the Giants in the winner’s bracket.

Both Johnny Avila and Gerson Gomez (2 for 4) connected on home runs for the Giants, and Gomez was also the Giants’ starting pitcher before giving way to Jacob Moon and Brunn in relief. Alex Gouveia had two hits in the win for the Giants.

The Giants will continue tournament action Saturday against the Salida Rockies.

Salida 15, Northgate 7

The Northgate A’s were able to hang with the Salida Rockies for the early innings, but the Rockies continued to score runs, scoring eight times in the final two innings on their way to a 15-7 win.

The A’s were able to have some success offensively, getting two hits from Daniel Ault, a double from Tyler Slaughter and a two-run homer from Brayden Hardcastle. Keeping the Rockies from scoring proved to be the challenge.

Northgate will be back on the diamond at 5:30 p.m. taking on the Mountain House Giants.
