The Modesto Twins competed a season sweep of Ripon Babe Ruth’s senior-division squad with a 5-4 victory Tuesday at Mistlin Park.
Ripon, which caps the season with a 15-6 record, lost two the stacked Twins by a total of four runs in three contests. The team will now direct its focus toward the California Babe Ruth District I All-Star Tournament that begins July 5 in Hollister.
They appeared prime to get over the hump Tuesday when Zac Carrillo knocked in Zach Gase (doubled) and Elijah English (singled) with a base hit for a first-inning lead. Starting pitcher Cory Van Warmerdam retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before Modesto staged a four-run rally to take the lead in the fourth.
Tyler Scharnow, who tossed two perfect innings and struck out three in relief, kept Ripon within range. His run-scoring single in the fourth made it 4-3.
The Twins tacked on another run in the fifth. Ripon answered with Makana Ward’s run in the bottom half.
