RIPON – Developing football talent is something that is going on all over the nation.

Developing football talent correctly is a completely different story.

The Ripon High football program is conducting its second annual full-contact football camp, and the camp’s coaching staff is focused on preparing kids to play football – correctly.

“We are just trying to help kids get better,” Ripon High head football coach Chris Johnson said of his three-day camp. “It is open to anybody and it’s based on fundamental football. We are trying to help kids not only be a better football player, but be able to protect themselves on the field.

“With all the stuff that is out there about head injuries, it’s important for players to have good technique.”

Players from all over the Central Valley made their way to the camp, conducted by Johnson’s coaching staff as well as some of his returning varsity starters. Camp goers competed in a variety of drills, and football activities, battling and having fun all at the same time.

With a large contingent of the camp likely on its way to becoming Ripon Indians, a great deal of the campers will begin high school playing for other programs.

“We take all comers,” Johnson said. “We’ve got kids that are here from Patterson, Modesto, Ceres and of course a lot of Ripon kids, so it has definitely been a good deal.”

Several of Ripon’s key components to last year’s varsity squad found their way into drills and activities. Kids were definitely responsive to the high school players, bonding with some of the players they will be watching play on Friday nights.

“We ask them to be here if they can be,” Johnson said. “A lot of them are out working and a lot play other sports, but most of these guys are here willingly.

“And I think if you ask them, at the end of the day, they have a good time.”
