Tyler Scharnow’s seven-inning pitching gem was spoiled in Ripon Babe Ruth’s 2-1 loss to San Benito in the first-round of the 16-18-year-old Central California State Tournament Thursday in Hollister.

San Benito got five shutout innings from Skyler Fuss and a clutch two-inning save from Kevin Saldas, who entered the sixth staring at a bases-loaded, no-out jam and escaping with the 2-0 lead still intact.

Scharnow struck out seven in a four-hitter and led off Ripon’s last-ditch effort to get on board with a single. John Olague followed with a double, and Nolan Kelley drove in pinch-runner Jacob Guinn with a one-out single. Olague’s attempt to tie the ballgame was thwarted at home plate when he tried scoring on a passed ball.

Ripon had no trouble getting runners on base throughout. Jason Angelo and Cory Van Warmerdam each had two hits to lead the way, and Zach Gase added a double. Ripon would leave nine runners stranded.

Ripon will have to win three straight over the next two days to reach the championship round from the losers bracket. It must first get past Tracy tonight at 7 p.m. back at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
