The Ripon Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old all-stars picked up some momentum in the Central California State Tournament in Hollister with Friday’s 11-3 rout of Tracy.

Makana Ward set the tone with a two-run double in the first, and Elijah English swatted a two-run triple in the second to help Ripon build an early 6-0 lead.

That allowed Ripon to save starting pitcher Mike Leland for what could be a four-games-in-two-days run. Leland threw two shutout innings, while Kyle Hvizda gave up three runs on five hits in his five mop-up innings. Ripon was up 8-0 before Tracy got on board with two in the bottom of the fourth.

Zac Carrillo, Josh English, Cory Van Warmerdam and Leland are available for today’s game against Hanford scheduled for 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The winner plays again at 7 tonight against the loser of the Modesto-San Benito winners-bracket semifinal.

Van Warmerdam led Ripon’s offense on Friday with three RBIs in a 2-for-3 effort. Elijah English went 2 for 4 with three runs scored.
