RIPON – At the midway point of the summer, Stouffer Field is in the process of a much-needed makeover.

“We’ve come a long way,” said Stephanie Hobbs, president of the Ripon Community Athletic Foundation. “We still have a long way to go.”

At Monday’s Ripon Unified school board meeting, she provided an update of the work going at the stadium.

While located on the Ripon High campus, Stouffer Field services the entire community. In the fall, for example, the stadium is home field to Ripon High football, Ripon Christian High football, and the Ripon Chief youth football program.

Hobbs, who, along with her husband, Vince, started a grass-root effort to upgrade the football field and track to the 70-year-old facility about five years ago.

After years of fundraising, RCAF – the Hobbs and others make up this non-profit group – finally got the green light to break ground on Phase One of the project in late May.

Work here included demolishing, surveying, installing sprinklers, and paving for areas behind both end zones. The finished product will be a regulation-sized football / soccer field along with an eight-lane dirt track.

Meanwhile, Hobbs told the board that work this weekend will consist of moving dirt to fill in some of the trenches. “It’s a great work out,” she said, urging for more volunteers.

Hobbs added that Ripon Christian families recently helped out by doing some land laser leveling of the field.

She’s also in need of volunteers for next Wednesday, July 18, to help work on the field beginning at 6 a.m.

Hobbs is also expecting the arrival of the new state-of-the-art scoreboard for early next month.

In addition, she’s been thrilled with the added support during construction stages.

“We’ve had so many companies come from out of town to help out,” Hobbs said.
