Spreckels Park Little League stood with the tying runs on second and third and the winning run in the box, but the major division All-Star team would come no closer, falling to Salida in the District 67 Championship 5-3 Wednesday at Northgate Little League’s Gillen Field.

Spreckels could not get anything going against Salida starter Matt Dallas, who was the difference in the contest, striking out seven and holding Spreckels to just two hits in his four-plus innings of work. Spreckels put together its best chances when Salida went to its bullpen.

The team took advantage of its final shot, ending the fifth inning with a perfectly executed, shortstop-to-catcher-to-first double play to eliminate valuable insurance runs Salida was looking to put up. Shortstop Dylan Heath fired to catcher Christopher Contreras, who threw a strike to Mason James to end the inning.

Offensively, Spreckels was no different, turning a 5-1 deficit to a 5-3 game with the first four batters of the sixth inning. Christopher Contreras got a key RBI hit to pull Spreckels to within three and a Zach Maderos RBI would pull them as close as they’d get.

Salida took control of what seemed like a close one-run ball game when the group put together back-to-back homeruns to seize momentum. Dallas again had the big hit, blasting a three-run homer that was followed by a solo shot.

Both Josh Tanner and Jessie Babauta both came around to score in the final.

Spreckels closes the District 67 Championship as the runner up, while Salida advances to the Section G Tournament which gets underway Saturday in Ione.
