Charm Mathis contends that at 56 years old she is in the best shape of her life.

After her second consecutive third place finish during the 2012 Reebok sponsored CrossFit Games, Mathis left a laundry-list of competitors that would have to support her claim.

The retired Stockton Police Sergeant is now one of the fittest women in the world.

“I had no idea what it was,” Mathis said of cross-fit training. “I ran and I lifted weights and just kind of maintained the same. When I started mixing that with cross-fit and a better eating style, my body transformed.

“I’m in the best shape of my entire life.”

With the final of seven events remaining and a placing amongst the fittest women in the world seemingly out of reach Mathis found something when she was competing in the 2012 CrossFit Games. That something propelled her to a second place finish, solidifying Mathis as the Games’ third place overall finisher in the Master Women’s division.

Mathis’ secured her second consecutive third place finish in the 55-59-year-old group during the event showcasing competitors going through a gauntlet of challenges to test fitness.

“It definitely gassed me,” Mathis said of the final workout which included pushing an 180-pound sled 40-feet. “It showed my weakness, but you just keep going. I remember hearing Danny (Lehr), my trainer and coach, he just kept encouraging me and it kept me going.”

The initial task at hand was for Mathis to come in and try and finish among the top ladies for the second time in two years. The template to succeed was in place, yet accomplishing the challenge was an entirely different process.

“It was my second year doing it so I was a little more comfortable than before,” Mathis said. “But I was still scared, nervous and apprehensive when I got out there to compete.”

Mathis’ drive towards becoming one of the fittest women in the world is as impressive as her back-to-back placings in the live televised event. After securing a spot amongst the world’s elite, Mathis has no desire to turn from her newfound passion.

“I thought it’d be something I came and conquered and I’d want to do something else,” Mathis said. “But no, it’s my life. I’m addicted; I like how I look, how I feel. I like my eating style and everybody that I have met has been wonderful.”

Mathis is just one fraction of the women who are chasing their inner-most fit self later in the game than most would expect. Conquering these obstacles are impressive at any stage and support the fact that it is never too late.

“These ladies are all amazing,” Mathis said. “What’s nice is, we’re all over 50, and to be able to do what we do is just impressive. There were some women out there competing over 60. You don’t have to just sit and do nothing.

“You can still go out and be active.”
