Man trying to rob pot operation killed

OAKLAND (AP) — The caretaker of an indoor marijuana growing operation in Oakland's Chinatown district shot and killed a man early Monday after the man and two others tried to rob the operation, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 5 a.m. after three men tried to barge into a duplex about two blocks from the Oakland police headquarters downtown. The caretaker killed one of the suspects after they fatally shot his watchdog, police said.

"Officers responded to reports of gunfire," Oakland Police Lt. Kevin Wiley told reporters. "Upon arrival, they found one man deceased. . It appears to be a home invasion robbery."

Investigators have found the gun apparently used by the caretaker and another weapon that apparently belonged to one of the robbers.

4 arrested at Livermore lab nuke weapons protest

LIVERMORE, Calif. (AP) — Four anti-nuclear weapons protesters have been arrested outside California's Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.

About 100 demonstrators gathered in a park across from the Alameda County weapons lab on Sunday afternoon to mark the 67th anniversary of the World War II atomic bombing on Hiroshima, Japan.

Protesters moved across the street to the lab gate and four demonstrators conducted a symbolic foreclosure on the property.

ROLLER COASTER BACK IN SERVICE AFTER STALL

VALLEJO  (AP) — A roller coaster that stalled at a Northern California theme park, stranding a dozen riders 150 feet above the ground, is back in service.

Superman Ultimate Flight at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo began running again over the weekend.

Park spokeswoman Nancy Chan says engineers determined the July 29 stall was caused by insufficient power to the coaster's launch system. The problem has been corrected.

No one was injured during the incident. The riders were stuck upright for about 90 minutes before the roller coaster was restarted and came down, traveling backwards.
