FONTANA . (AP) — A caged pit bull with no water and no shade has been found dead in a Southern California backyard during a triple-digit heat wave.

A second dog was near death when it was rescued by a Fontana animal control officer responding to a neighbor's tip.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says 26-year-old Fontana dog owner Jose Luis Delallata has been arrested for investigation of animal cruelty.

The 2½-year-old pit bull named Kona was locked in a cage placed in direct sunlight on a concrete driveway. The temperature inside the cage was about 150 degrees.

Fontana Animal Control Officer Jamie Simmons managed to revive the other pit bull named Kush by administering mouth-to-muzzle rescue breathing.

Kush was still recovering on Wednesday at an animal hospital.
