Modesto police shoot suspect in stabbing

MODESTO (AP) — Modesto police have shot and killed a man suspected of stabbing a teenager and intentionally crashing into a home.

Police say two officers opened fire at the unidentified man after he put his vehicle in reverse and tried to accelerate early Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said the man had fought with his girlfriend and threw a knife at her while she was on a neighbor's porch. Her 17-year-old son, who was also there, allegedly jumped on the man, and a struggle ensued. The 17-year-old was stabbed, but is expected to be okay.

As police arrived, the suspect allegedly drove an SUV towards the neighbor's home, hitting her porch. Police say the officers opened fire when he tried to accelerate backwards.

The suspect died at the scene. A woman who was struck by his vehicle was in stable condition.

Central Valley drug agents make huge meth seizure

MERCED  (AP) — Members of a Central Valley drug task force say they've seized millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine in what is believed to be the largest meth bust ever conducted in the valley.

Merced County District Attorney Larry Morse says as part of an investigation that began with the purchase of one pound of methamphetamine in April, agents with the Merced Multi-Agency Narcotics Task Force later seized 330 pounds of the drug.

Morse says the street value of the meth is estimated to be more than $9 million. Agents also seized more than $100,000, three vehicles and arrested 11 people.

The drugs were believed to be produced by an international drug cartel that officials say use the Central Valley as a hub for its methamphetamine operation.

Officials plan to release more information during a Wednesday morning press conference.
