Three Little League District 67 all-star tournaments kick off action today in Manteca, Tracy and Salida and a number of local clubs are expected to do big things.

In Tracy, the Major Division tournament begins at Jefferson School and the vaunted Northgate Little League squad is an early favorite.

Two years ago, Northgate’s “Candy Cane” all-star squad comprised of 9 and 10-year-olds made it all the way to the championship round of the Section 3 All-Star Tournament in Pleasanton.

The team was comprised of many recognizable names, including Jake Pruitt, Ian Rodriguez, Jacob Alvarado, Chris Ah Yo, Kyle Oden and Nick Lucchetti, among many others, and most are back this season to try and capture the Major Division crown.

“They’ve been practicing hard and they’re ready,” Northgate assistant coach Bill Bassi said. “We’re bigger, stronger and faster, (and) you’d like to expect that we’ll do well, but everyone has improved since they were 10.”

The strength of Northgate’s squad is its experienced pitching rotation, which Bassi says goes 11 hurlers deep.

Trevor Huntoon, Lucas Garcia, Andrew Ruiz, Pruitt, Lucchetti, Alvarado, Ah Yo and Rodriguez are just a few of the many pitchers on the squad, which boasts a formidable lineup at the dish as well.

But they won’t be alone in Tracy.

Manteca, which will be led on the hill by Athletics teammates Chuck Good and Ryan Vasquez will also send a talented squad, as will Spreckels Park, which will send a number of players from the championship Indians, the runner-up White Sox, and third-place A’s.

Spreckels and Northgate will square off today at 2 p.m. on Field 2, while Manteca will play on Field 4 at the same time against Mountain House.

Weston Ranch and Lathrop will kick off the tournament at 10 a.m. on Field 4.

Patterson will meet Salida at 10 a.m. today as well, while the host Tracy American and National squads will enjoy first-round byes before kicking off play Sunday.

Spreckels Park Little League will host the 9-10-year-old All Star Tournament today at Neil Hafley School.

Lathrop and Mountain House fire things up at 10 a.m. alongside Salida and Tracy American B.

Tracy National B will meet Tracy National A at 12:30 p.m., while Weston Ranch will face Tracy American A.

Spreckels, Manteca, Northgate and Patterson will all begin the tournament Sunday.

In Salida, the 10-11-year-old tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. when Manteca takes on Tracy National.

Weston Ranch and Spreckels Park will do battle at 11:30, and Northgate will face Tracy America at 2:30 p.m.

The host Salida squad will take Saturday off, and will face the winner of Manteca versus Tracy National Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
