East Union’s volleyball team took its worst loss of the early season Wednesday but showed signs of progress in Turlock.

Pitman overpowered the Lancers in a three-game sweep — 25-14, 25-10, 25-4. The Pride improved to 3-1 with notable three-set wins over Oakdale, an annual contender in the Valley Oak League, and reigning Trans-Valley League titlist Escalon.

“That is probably one of the best teams in the section,” East Union coach Rich Posz said. “In the first game we had five kills and did pretty well, but we started giving up huge scoring runs from the service line. That seems to be our tendency — we can’t seem to get a sideout.”

That was especially the case in the third game, when Pitman jumped out on a 14-1 run. The Pride’s second server was on the line for 10 straight points.

Monica King and Alexis Steele notched two kills apiece for the Lancers (1-3). Courtney Posz contributed eight assists, and Kayla Lamont had three digs.

East Union will play its third match in as many nights this evening against visiting Franklin.

The Squires (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season by scores of 7-25, 14-25.

“This is probably the best JV team in the area that we’ve played,” EU coach Mike Morenzone said. “Our girls did a good job, but they got a little intimidated in the beginning.”

Morenzone was especially impressed by the play of Sabrina Hernandez and Estefany Jauregui in the back row. They each turned in six digs.
