• FIERY CAR CRASH INTO LA PIZZERIA KILLS 3 PEOPLE: LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a car has crashed into a pizzeria in Los Angeles, killing three people and triggering a blaze.

Sgt. Donald Kelly says the crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in Studio City. The three died instantly.

Kelly says the BMW ran off the road and hit Reno’s Pizzeria on Ventura Boulevard. It’s not immediately clear what caused the driver to crash.



• 1 DIED, ANOTHER DEHYDRATED ON PALM SPRINGS TRAIL: PALM SPRINGS  (AP) — A hiker has died and another one suffered severe dehydration after they were found in a rugged canyon south of Palm Springs.

Authorities said rangers with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla found the two on a trail around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s department said one hiker was unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other one displayed severe signs of dehydration and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.



• BEAR TRANQUILIZED AFTER WANDERING ONTO LA FREEWAY: MONTROSE  (AP) — A Southern California freeway was briefly shut down when a bear wandered into lanes before scrambling up an embankment and into a nearby neighborhood, where it was tranquilized.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cynthia Gonzales says the bear was spotted Sunday morning on the 210 Freeway north of downtown LA. All lanes in both directions were closed as a crew from the state Department of Fish and Game was called.

Gonzales says wardens followed the bear as it ambled for less than a mile through a business district and residential streets of Montrose, a foothill community.

The animal was surrounded at an intersection and hit with tranquilizer darts.

Gonzales says the bear will be taken back up into Angeles National Forest.



• BOY, 18, SHOT TO DEATH IN PITTSBURG PARK: PITTSBURG  (AP) — Police in Pittsburg are searching for the gunman who fatally shot an 18-year-old boy who was filming a rap music video in a city park.

Police Lt. Ron Raman said two people confronted the teen Friday evening and one of them fired gunshots, striking him in the back of the head at least once before running away.

The victim, a Brentwood resident, was in a group of at least five people making the video.

Raman said the victim and the suspects knew each other, and that investigators have several promising leads in identifying the shooter.



• 5 WOUNDED IN OAKLAND SHOOTINGS: OAKLAND (AP) — Five people were wounded after a series of separate shootings in Oakland that took place in a little more than two hours Saturday night.

In the first shooting, one person was hit by gunfire a little after 7 p.m. Saturday. Few details have been released, but police say the victim was treated at a hospital.

In the second shooting, three people were hospitalized when they were shot around 8:50 p.m.

A third shooting took place around 9:15 p.m. The victim of that shooting was also hospitalized, though police did not release additional details.



• DANA POINT BODY IDENTIFIED AS MISSING SWIMMER: DANA POINT  (AP) — Authorities say the body of a man recovered in the ocean off Dana Point has been identified as a swimmer who went missing over Labor Day weekend.

Coroner’s officials say an autopsy is planned this week for 34-year-old Frank Daniel Austin of Rowland Heights.

Austin’s body was found Saturday off Monarch Beach.

Austin’s mother reported him missing Sept. 2, several hours after he went swimming in high surf at Salt Creek Beach.



• GAS PRICES UP 8 CENTS OVER 2 WEEKS: CAMARILLO  (AP) — The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has jumped 8 cents over the past two weeks.

That’s according to the Lundberg Survey of fuel prices, released Sunday, which puts the price of a gallon of regular at $3.84.

Of the cities surveyed in the lower 48 states, El Paso, Texas, has the nation’s lowest average price for gas at $3.44. Chicago has the highest at $4.30.

In California, the lowest average price was $4.05 in Bakersfield. San Francisco has the highest at $4.19. The average statewide for a gallon of regular was $4.13.
