Ripon was roughly 15 minutes away from opening the Trans-Valley League season victorious at Escalon Wednesday.

Two set-piece goals from the Cougars ruined it.

Hugo Cervantes scored off a corner kick during the final minutes for the deciding goal and a shocking 4-3 Escalon win. Ignacio Placencia, who accounted for the Escalon’s first three goals, knotted it late on a follow-up of a free kick that caromed off the crossbar.

Arik Anaya also had a hat trick for Ripon (0-1, 4-6 overall). Jack Brierly and Flavio Valadao each contributed an assist.

It was a tough way for the Indians to begin conference play. With only 10 matches (Modesto Christian is not fielding a team), they need every point they can get to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Ripon failed to hold leads of 2-1 and 3-2.

“We definitely shot ourselves in the foot today,” Ripon coach Jamie DeBruyn said. “We had defenders standing there watching the ball on those last two goals.

“If we have any aspirations of winning league, we need to beat Escalon. This is definitely not the way we wanted to start league.”

Ripon begins a five-match homestand next Monday against Hughson.
