How one feels about themselves has a lot to do with their physical health. But many people have found that they can boost the way they perceive of their physical self  by undergoing cosmetic procedures.

A number of people opt for procedures that give themselves a new youthful appearance to surgeries to correct parts of their body they are not happy with.

A number of doctors in the area provide lower-cost cosmetic procedures to help people erase wrinkles, acne scars, brown spots and sun-damaged skin through the use of Fraxel laser.

Broadband light is used to repair facial veins, rosacea, hair reduction and the less expensive skin tightening.

Improving one’s looks may be more affordable than one thinks, ranging from hundreds for dermabrasion for smoother skin to thousands for laser treatment. All costs depend on how much procedure is involved.

Patients who seek cosmetic procedures run the gamut in age.

“With the Fraxel laser, I’ll have kids with acne scars from 14 years old up to age 87,” said Dr. Kerry Evnin of Above Lasers in Ceres. “So kids will be more of the acne scars or someone who has had a real traumatic scar, like a dog bit them or cats or animal bites or someone slashed them. Sometimes it’s to resurface surgery scars.”

In many cases, patients over the age of 50 want to reduce the effects of time and are willing to invest money in Fraxel procedure to achieve what Evnin says is an appearance that is five to 10 years younger.

“You stimulate new stem cells to make new skin,” explained Evnin of how the Fraxel works.

He estimates that one treatment can result in a 20 to 40 percent improvement.

“Even after the first treatment you’re going ‘wow.’ And every time you do a laser, like a silk screen, it just keeps getting improving 20 to 40 percent.”

“How many treatments a person needs depends on severity.”

Evnin and other physicians do caution their patients to not set unrealistic expectations for the outcome.

“We’re going to markedly improve them but they’re not going to be 100 percent perfect, necessarily. We’re shooting for 70 to 90 percent improvement. They’ll be way better than when they came in.”

Brown spots can be erased completely but will return if a person gets exposed to the sun or UV rays.

With some patients, the Fraxel can only remedy so much. In the case of deep laugh lines, or severe “ice-pick” scarring,  Botox or injectable fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse may be an option.

Evnin said Botox – a neuromuscular block – has received a bad reputation because of celebrities who adversely altered from overdoing things.

“They were done by people who didn’t know what they were doing,” said Evnin. “With modern techniques you’ll have your face looking correct. You don’t want to fully block the muscles. You need some expression. I’ve been trained by expert people who write the books. I try to make my patients look natural. I want them to look healthier.”

Evnin does surgical scar removals but refers patients to local cosmetic surgeons in the Modesto area.
