MODESTO OFFICIALS VOTE TO STOP WATER DEAL WITH SF: MODESTO  (AP) — Modesto water officials are no longer negotiating with San Francisco to sell Tuolumne River water to the coastal city.

The Modesto Irrigation District on Tuesday voted against further negotiations after the two sides failed to agree on contract terms.

San Francisco agreed to pay $700 per acre foot for 2,240 acre feet per year. The water would have been sent into San Francisco's Hetch Hetchy system, which serves four Bay Area counties.

However, the city would not agree to the irrigation district's proposal to reduce the amount of water it could send in dry years; and MID also wanted the right to end the sale for any reason, at any time.

While negotiations have ceased, San Francisco officials said they remain open to future discussions.
