LATHROP – Another Lathrop Elementary School student is saying that she had a run-in with an adult on her way to campus.

According to Principal David Silveira, the student was walking near the Lathrop dog park near Thomsen Street at around 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 28 when an adult male pulled up and asked her if she needed a ride.

The incident, he said, wasn’t reported to administrators until 11 a.m., and parents were notified via the school’s mass dial system.

A note was also placed on the school’s Facebook page.

It’s the third time in a month that an incident involving an adult and a student has been reported at or near the school, and the first time that an adult actually tried to get a student into their vehicle.

At the beginning of the month a participant in an after-school program reported witnessing a male exposing himself in a bathroom on-campus – sparking a fiery reaction by parents concerned for the safety of their students and kids in general.

Two days prior to the latest incident, an unidentified Asian male driving a grey four-door vehicle allegedly exposed himself to a student walking to school near the intersection of Thomsen Road and Warfield Avenue.

A letter outlining what happened was sent with home with students, and parents were notified via the school-wide system and the school’s Facebook page.

And police presence, according to Silveira, has been increased when students are on their way to and coming home from school.

“They’re out there looking and stopping people and keeping eyes on everything,” he said. “They’ve really been patrolling and keeping a strong presence at the school, and they’re looking for help from the community.”

But according to a release from Lathrop Police Services, the alleged culprit hasn’t just been targeting young girls.

In at least one instance he allegedly exposed himself to an adult female, and is believed to have used two different cars during his outings. They are described as:

• Newer Model (2000 to Present) Grey or Silver 4-door Chevy Malibu with dark tinted rear windows and chrome rims.

• Mid-to-late 90’s white four-door hatchback (import type) passenger car with dark tinted windows, stock rims (not chrome), loud exhaust and front and rear bumpers that are painted black.

The subject is described as a clean-shaven Asian male – roughly 5-foot, 7-inches – that usually wears dark sweats and a black Beanie hat.

Contacting him, if seen, is not advised.

“If you see either the vehicle or the male subject, do not make contact with him,” reads a bulletin from the San Joaquin County Sherriff’s Department. “Immediately contact the Sherriff’s office at (209) 468-4400 and advice them of the location. If it is safe to do so, attempt to obtain a license plate on the vehicle.”

Discussion about installing cameras on the school campus to deter criminals from entering the facility like the alleged perpetrator did at the beginning of the month has been taking place, and has become somewhat of a hot-button issue with the election just around the corner.

To contact Lathrop Police Services – located at 15597 7th Street – directly, call 858-5551. The San Joaquin Sherriff’s Department can be reached at (209) 468-4400.
