The Weston Ranch Cougars have made climbs throughout this Valley Oak League season. The group has put together competitive contests against the hierarchy of the league and that continued Thursday with a 1-1 tie against East Union High.

The two clubs entered the halftime intermission deadlocked in a 0-0 tie. The Lancers were the ones to strike first, landing their first goal in the 60th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Weston Ranch had opportunity after opportunity over the final 20 minutes of the match, but was only able to cash in on one.

“We were able to dominate possession in that first half,” Weston Ranch co-head coach Julio Madrigal said. “We had chances in the second half; we hit the post and missed on a free-kick that was stopped.

“Our kids played great though, they earned this tie.”

The Cougars would land the tie in the match’s final minute, scoring off a rebound from a corner kick in the 79th minute from Jareth Guzman.

The Cougars will try and continue with their momentum, Tuesday when they travel to Lathrop to take on the Spartans.

Lathrop 1, Oakdale 1

The Spartans took a first-half 1-0 lead, but could not protect it in a 1-1 tie with Oakdale Thursday in VOL play.

Lathrop netted a goal from Danny Beceera, but the Mustangs responded in the second half to earn the draw. The Spartans came into the contest depleted by injuries and the lack of depth clearly plagued the club.

Southern League

Ripon Christian 2, Denair 2

The Knights closed out their league battle with Denair in a 2-2 tie Thursday in SL action.

Ripon Christian was down 2-0 to the Redskins but mounted a ferocious comeback led by David Yu’s goal from 25-yards out in the second half knotted the contest at 2-2.

The Knights netted their first score on behalf of Gustine, getting their first points from an own-goal from the Redskins.
