In a short period of time, Ripon High’s water polo program has thrust itself to the top of the Valley Oak League standings.

With Wednesday’s 10 -6 road victory over defending champion Oakdale, the Indians have claimed at least a portion of the VOL boys crown.

Ripon (5-0) got scoring productivity from up and down the roster, snatching its second victory over the Mustangs in league play. The victory likely sets Ripon up for quality positioning in the upcoming Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, but first the Indians will have to handle Kimball at home in the league finale for Ripon.

“I don’t look too far ahead,” Ripon head coach Eric Zador said. “I just know that these guys have come a long way from where they started. We pride ourselves on our defense and it has truly come a long way.

“They are finally starting to click together as a team.”

Cole Gonzalez and Caleb Rodgers both netted two goals for the Indians, who got quality play from goalie Ryan Jessup.

A victory over Kimball Wednesday would wrap up an undefeated VOL championship season for Ripon and also the league’s top playoff spot berth.

The Indians will get in some valuable work this weekend in the always-competitive DeLong Tournament in Modesto Friday and Saturday.

“This is a good tournament to be in only a few weeks away from sections,” Zador said. “It definitely gets us to compete against some really good high end teams.

“We’ll finite the rest of our issues, if we have any and go on from there.”

The Indians open DeLong Tournament action with a 10:15 a.m. contest against Merced at Pitman High.
