RIPON — Ripon Police detectives Sgt. Terri Jensen and Officer Gordon West of the newly formed Special Investigations Unit conducted surveillance on a residence in Richmond looking for a suspect who had robbed the Barnwood Arms downtown gun shop of a $1,200 weapon Oct. 11.

The suspect, Russell John Cose, 42, of Modesto, was confronted by officers and safely taken into custody without incident, according to Ripon’s First Sergeant Steve Merchant.  During the course of the investigation detectives were told the Springfield EMP 1911, 9 mm hand gun had been discarded into an area canal.

Cose had allegedly taken the gun out of an unlocked display case when the clerks were busy with other customers.

Sgt. Merchant credited the cooperation of a Ripon business, a citizen’s tip and the dogged police work by Detectives Jensen and West with the quick resolution in the case.

Cose was charged with the felony theft of a firearm and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.
