MODESTO  (AP) — Modesto police say they have arrested a 15-year veteran of their force on molestation charges.

The police department said in a release that 40-year-old police officer Robert Hodges was taken into custody Monday, hours after the department learned about the allegations.

Hodges is accused of molesting an underage female family member repeatedly between 2009 and 2010. The department says none of the alleged incidents happened while Hodges was on duty.

Interim police chief Gene Balentine says in a statement that he was shocked by the allegations.

Hodges remained held at the Stanislaus County Jail on multiple felony molestation charges. He most recently was a police sergeant on patrol, but has been placed on administrative leave.

Police say the investigation has been forwarded to the county district attorney's office for prosecution.
