Woman in burning Castro Valley home beaten

CASTRO VALLEY (AP) — Authorities say the woman whose body was found in a burning Castro Valley home was brutally beaten before her home was intentionally set on fire.

Alameda County Sheriff's officials have not identified a suspect in the slaying of 58-year-old Barbara Latiolais, whose body was found on Thursday.

Authorities have, however, released a description of a man seen leaving the couple's stolen Volvo station wagon. The car was found several hours after the fire.

Sheriff's spokesman J.D. Nelson says there may be more than one suspect. Valuables were taken from the home although he did not elaborate on what they were.

Violence prevention program debuts in Oakland

OAKLAND  (AP) — The nationally recognized Operation Ceasefire violence prevention program has debuted in Oakland.

Major crimes are up 20 percent in Oakland this year. Burglaries are up about 40 percent over last year and the city has already recorded at least 100 homicides.

The program involves law enforcement officers working closely with community activists like pastors and teachers to rein in violent individuals.

A carrot-and-stick approach uses the promise of employment opportunities and the threat of incarceration as tools to get troublemakers off the streets.

Object thought to be meteor chunk just a rock

NOVATO  (AP) — It turns out an object that hit a Northern California home and thought to be a meteorite is just a rock.

A Novato homeowner heard the object hit her roof during last week's meteor shower that lit up skies over the San Francisco Bay area.

She later read that a piece of meteor may have hit ground in her area and she found the 2-inch rock.

Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute in Mountain View announced on Sunday that it was a meteorite.

But the chagrined meteor hunter said on Tuesday that it was actually a natural rock from Earth.
