Jennifer Mitzman is keeping up with a family tradition.

She and Ashley Bergman, both of Sierra High, attended the Pacific Music Camp on the campus of the University of the Pacific.

Mitzman, who plays clarinet, is the third in her family to attend the Senior Band Camp for ninth-through-12th grade students.

Both of her parents – Debbie and Joel Mitzman – are graduates of UOP, with her mother attending the same camp as a high school junior back in 1971. Her older brother, Joseph, went three years ago to the UOP music camp.

“I want to attend UOP and study music, possibly music therapy,” said Jennifer Mitzman, who listed the people, the music, and the experience of camp among the highlights of this summer program.

She was selected to the 2008 County Junior High Honor Band and was a member of the 2009 Manteca Unified School District High School Honor Band.

Ashley Bergman, who plays the trumpet, is the daughter of Natalyn and Tom Bergman of Manteca.
She, too, participated in the master classes, sectionals, and camp chorus.

For their music electives, Bergman and Mitzman chose percussion ensemble, piano lab and vocal techniques.
The camp, meanwhile, concluded with a concert in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall.

“I can’t wait to go back again – I really liked the people,” Bergman said. “The camp helped me improve on trumpet.”

She and Mitzman are also members of the Sierra High band under the direction of Rick Hammarstrom, and were named to the 2008 Junior High Honor Band.

The Pacific Music Camp is in its 65th year and offers a wide variety of ensembles, electives, and social activities for junior and senior high school musicians.

Nearly 500 students from across the western U.S. took part in the camp this past summer.
