A drive-by shooter awakened neighbors in the 1900 block of Sparrowhawk Street with the discharge of five to six rounds from what was believed to have been a semi-automatic hand gun into a parked vehicle about 2:30 Thursday morning.
A Manteca Police dispatcher received multiple 911 calls from residents reporting the gunfire. Several reported seeing a man running into a nearby park without a shirt; however officers later discounted the man’s involvement. In fact he was one of the reporting parties to the shooting, they said.
Citizens living near the scene said they had heard a vehicle speed out of the neighborhood after the rounds were fired off. One said he distinctly heard two groupings of gun shots – three at first, followed shortly after a short pause by three more.
Patrolmen swarmed the area in an effort to find the shooter, but they were unsuccessful.
