Manteca Police see success in effort to keep gangs in check

Aggravated assault - primarily gang-related shootings - surged 57.14 percent in Manteca during June going from seven to 11 incidents.

Such assaults through the of the first six months of 2012 were running 37.5 percent ahead of last year at the same time. It was an ominous outlook since such violence normally continues to climb over the hot summer months.

But that was before the Manteca City Council found a way to resurrect the four-man Manteca Police gang unit despite the sluggish economy by shifting four officers with gang fighting experience to the unit. At the same time, the council added four more police officers to the overall force to increase manpower by almost 8 percent.

The September crime report shows aggravated assaults fueled by gang violence are down 46.15 percent from September 2011. At the same time the first nine months of the year has seen an 8.45 percent jump in aggravated assaults going from 71 to 77 for the same nine month period in 2011.

Overall, Manteca Police statistics for the first nine months of this year show total felonies are up 2.9 percent when compared to the first nine months of last year inching up from 1,622 incidents from last year to 1,669 this year. That includes all so-called Part One crimes the FBI measures to gauge a community’s criminal activity.

Meanwhile burglaries through Sept. 30 30 of the current year gave dropped from 857 to 738 compared to the first nine months of 2011 for a 13.89 percent drop. The value of property stolen has fallen 30.33 percent from $4,675,000 to $3,257,070. property receiver, though has dropped 4236 percent going from $1,760,998 to $1,015,042. The percent of property value recovered also is down to 31.16 percent from a higher level of 37.67 percent last year.

There have been no homicides so far this year compared to three in the first nine months of 2011.

Crimes that have fallen in comparing the same nine months of 2010 to 2011 in Manteca are as follows:

• Commercial burglary down 6.72 percent going from 134 to 125.

• Residential burglary down 26.51 percent going from 249 to 183.

• Auto burglary down 11.98 percent going from 459 to 404.

• Grand theft down 13.51 percent going from 111 to 96.

• Arson down 11.76 percent going from 17 to 15.

Crimes that went up during the following period were:

• Robbery up 62.16 percent going from 37 to 60.

• Vehicle theft up 50.8 percent going from 187 to 282.

• Rape and unlawful intercourse up 45.45 percent going from 11 to 16.
