A $26,400 grant has been awarded to the Manteca Police Department by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to conduct a series of DUI check points and other enforcement assignments within the city.

OTS director Christopher Murphy said the DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in drinking and drug related driving deaths from 2006 to 2010 in California.

Last year Manteca saw one killed and some 25 injured in crashes tied to alochol.  Collisions involving alcohol have dropped by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized check points are conducted – resulting in savings of $6 for every $1 spent, according to the OTS.

OTS Director Christopher Murphy noted that the tragedy of DUIs accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities adding that Manteca needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that this grant will provide.

Funding for the program for OTS is provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
