SANTA ANA  (AP) — Orange County prosecutors say a man who repeatedly threatened police with a submachine gun during a 3-hour standoff in Santa Ana has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Spokeswoman Farrah Emami says 45-year-old Stephen Thomas Foust was sentenced Friday after being found guilty of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer and other crimes by a jury on Aug. 8.

In June 2009, Foust lived in a Santa Ana mobile home with his parents and told them that he intended to kill himself. He also threatened to kill his father, who called police.

Officers who arrived at the scene say instead of dropping his weapon as commanded, Foust yelled at them to shoot him.

He was shot in the shoulder before officers could arrest him.
