LATHROP - Four people were killed and seven were injured in a multi-vehicle head-on crash at about 4 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 5 in Elk Grove that involved a Lathrop family on their way home.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a southbound Ford Expedition with a driver and eight passengers had crossed over the median and crashed into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes. The crash involved a Honda Accord and a Toyota Rav4 that was pulling a trailer.

The CHP said both the Ford and the Honda had rolled over on impact with the occupants thrown out of their vehicles. Three individuals in the Expedition were reportedly killed as was the driver of the Honda with seven others being transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injures.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified one of the deceased as Kulwant Gill, 50, of Lathrop.

Two of the injured were transported to U.C. Davis Medical Center and confirmed to be Lathrop High School students. All seven are expected to recover, according to reports, although four had critical injuries. The six injured in the Expedition were two people from Lathrop: a woman in her 40s and a 17-year-old boy. Also injured in the SUV were four people from Berkeley: three women ages 18, 19 and 23 and a 20-year-old man.

The northbound lanes of I-5 were closed until near midnight as a Major Accident Investigation Team conducted its investigation. The southbound lanes were closed for some two hours until it was opened to traffic. Northbound traffic was detoured east to Highway 99.
