GUADALUPE  (AP) — Residents of Guadalupe have rejected a measure that would have changed the city's name to Guadalupe Beach, although the place is actually five miles from the Pacific Ocean.

City Clerk Juana Merino says 67 percent of the 976 voters rejected the proposed change.

The city of about 7,000 people lies west of Santa Maria in northern Santa Barbara County.

Proponents of the name change had hoped it would help make the city a tourist destination on California's Central Coast, where many fishing and farming communities are struggling in a bad economy.

Mayor Lupe Alvarez told the Los Angeles Times before the vote the measure could attract tourism and help land the city its first hotel without costing taxpayers a cent.
