Dominique Barnes left one successful program and will go to another.

The 2009 Manteca High graduate is heading out to Columbia, S.C. today to get settled in at Benedict College, an NCAA Division II men’s basketball powerhouse.

Barnes, a 6-foot-4 forward, averaged 8.5 points and 6.1 rebounds last winter while helping Manteca capture its first Valley Oak League championship in 20 years. The Buffaloes were 13-1 in conference action and 24-4 overall.

“He would have had more opportunities to score, but we had other guys we looked to go to first,” said Manteca coach Dave Asuncion, whose loaded starting five was led by all-VOL first-teamers Kiwi Gardner and CSU Monterey Bay-bound forward Nick Scheible.

“Numbers don’t always show you the little things that he does well. He did a great job for us inside with his rebounding, and on defense we had him guarding the other team’s big man.”

Barnes got big help from Modesto-based Gerald Spinks and G&R Enterprises in getting his name out to college this summer. Spinks said Barnes will receive a full-ride scholarship.

“He got in our program last of June, just a little over a month,” Spinks said. “Most people would think it’s impossible to get people scholarships that late, but we’ve been known to give scholarships right before school starts.

“This young man has worked really hard athletically and academically and he has been rewarded.”

Benedict College finished 21-3 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (24-6 overall) in 2008-09 and qualified for the NCAA Division II Basketball Championships for the fourth straight season.

Fifth-seeded Benedict was eliminated by No. 4 Arkansas Tech, 63-62 on a last-second shot, in the South Regional’s quarterfinal round.
