The Manteca Buffaloes were able to remove the foul taste of a poor performance in the Modesto City Classic opener with a strong showing Thursday, beating Modesto High 68-52 in loser’s bracket action.

The Buffaloes were led by Austin Haro’s 20 point effort and got 11 points apiece from Michael Hatfield and Steven Ruble.

Manteca opened with some efficiency, racing out to a 19-10 first quarter lead. A minor defensive lapse in the second quarter allowed the Panthers to keep the deficit at nine, but Manteca would add to the lead in each of the final two quarters.

“I’m real happy with the effort tonight,” Manteca head coach Dave Asuncion said. “We took care of the basketball and kept our turnovers to single digits versus the 30-plus we had last night.

“Hopefully we can build on this performance.”

The Buffaloes will be on the court to continue tournament action today against Pitman.
