There are 15  days left  for Turkeys R Us to make sure the Christmas meal needs of 1,800 struggling families in Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop are met.

The Dec. 17 date will allow the turkeys and hams to be distributed to the 24 food closets that serve the three communities in time to reach families for Christmas.

Mike Mallory, who is helping  coordinate the Turkeys R Us effort, noted there were 52 turkeys left over from the Thanksgiving campaign. Typically the effort will have a head start of 300 turkeys for the Christmas need.

The need is a bit lower than at Thanksgiving. Most of those requesting help at Christmas are described as struggling families classified as the working poor who do not typically request help feeding their families at other times during the year. Others include those hit with job ,losses, major medical, costs or the elderly trying to survive on fixed incomes.

Actual turkeys or hams can be dropped off at the food bank Industrial Park Drive specifically for the Turkeys R Us drive. The drop-off can be done Monday through Friday before 4:30 p.m.

Monetary donations can be dropped off at Coldwell Banker Crossroads at North and North Main Street in Manteca or the food bank. You can also call the Second Harvest Food Bank at 239-2091.
