Weston Ranch goes 4-3 at Newark Ironman Duals

Weston Ranch’s wrestling team had a busy Saturday with the boys competing in the Newark Memorial Ironman Duals and the girls staying closer to home for the 7th Annual McNair Invitational.

The boys returned from the Bay Area with a winning record of 4-3. They defeated Kennedy of Fremont 50-30, North Monterey 51-15, host Newark Memorial 45-30 and Mission San Jose of Fremont, 43-24. Their losses included a 35-33 defeat to Los Gatos, 45-28 to Castro Valley and 48-25 to Firebaugh.

James Simerley claimed an individual championship at 170 pounds, as did heavyweight Joe Gomez. Cody Simerley (220), Brandon Mungarro (145) and Candalario Elizondo (195) were each runners-up.

At McNair, a sixth-place finisher at last year’s CIF state girls invitational, placed first. Selena Valenzuela took third, Jazmen Blackwell was fourth and Mia Hill ended up fifth.

Weston Ranch is back in action Saturday at its own Cougar Duals tournament, which includes powerhouses Franklin of Elk Grove, Golden Valley and Vista del Lago.
