RIPON – With more forfeits than pins the Ripon Indians surely didn’t get their most challenging test, yet Ripon showed glimpses of where the club wants to be in a dominating 60-13 Trans Valley League wrestling win over Modesto Christian Wednesday.

The Crusaders came up empty in seven weight classes, making Ripon’s quest for the victory that much easier. Ripon was able to show off some strong wrestling in its light weights, getting a pair of impressive pins from Edgar Gonzalez (126) and Corey Goodwin (132).

“We’re pretty solid down there,” Ripon head coach Glen White said. “Once we get everybody to the weights they are supposed to be at we are going to be pretty solid. Corey is pretty much where he is going to be, Edgar is where he’s going to be, but we have some other guys who are trying to get down.

“Once the lineup is put together by the middle part of the season I think we’ll be pretty tough.”

Gonzalez looked extremely sharp, getting right to business in his match with instant aggression. His opponent was on the mat in less than 10 seconds – it was over in less than 40.

“I felt good; I’ve been practicing hard,” Gonzalez said. “I just go out there and work hard and try and get the points for the team.”

Goodwin was as impressive, stunning his opponent early in the second round and finishing him off via pin. The pair joined 220-pound weight class teammate Sam Beeler as the only Indians to garner pins.

Beeler took a little longer to land his pin (:02 remaining in the second), but nonetheless put forth the effort that every wrestling coach loves to see; especially in the season’s first few weeks.

“Sammy always gives his best effort,” White said of Beeler. “We can always count on him because he will go out there and he may not be the strongest guy and he may not be the most technical, but he will always give his best effort in every single match.

“That’s exactly why we love him.”
