The Sierra Timberwolves were able to open the Lodi Tournament on a good note, taking care of first round opponent Downey High 65-40 Thursday in Lodi.
Sierra (2-1) got a huge performance from Celine Barber who broke out with a 31-point evening for the Timberwolves.
“She was pretty consistent the entire game,” Sierra head coach Steve Unterholzner said. “A lot of her points came off of our pressure defense.”
Teammate Kayla Wilson also finished in double-figures with 14 and Sierra also got eight points from freshman Katelyn Teixeira.
The Timberwolves will be back on the court at 6:30 p.m. tonight when they take on the Beyer Patriots at Lodi High.
Stagg Tournament
Chavez 52, Weston Ranch 51
The Cougars dropped a game in the Stagg Tournament for the first time in two seasons when they fell to Chavez by a point Thursday in first round action.
Emoni Wilson had a huge outing, leading Weston ranch with 23 points. Brionna White chipped in with 14.
Weston Ranch will try to get back on track at 5 p.m. today against Sacramento High.
Sophomore
East Union 37, Modesto 36
The Lady Lancers trailed at halftime by seven points, but responded with a huge third quarter on their way to a one-point, come-from-behind win Thursday.
Anna Wood led the team with 19 points and five rebounds.
The Lancers will play tonight at 8:15 p.m. tonight when they meet up with Escalon in the second round of the Camelot Classic.
Tracy 62, Lathrop 45
The Spartan girls ran into a tough Tracy squad, falling to the Bulldogs by 17 Thursday.
Lathrop (1-2) was led by Ashley Diboki’s 11 points and Lauren Collins’ nine.
The Spartans will be on the court at 3:45 p.m. today against Sierra High.
Escalon 32, Manteca 30
The Buffaloes lost in the final seconds, dropping a heartbreaker to the Escalon Cougars in the EU Tournament.
Chelsea Burch led the Buffaloes with nine points and Alyssa Burch pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Freshman
Manteca 39, West 12
On Wednesday, the Manteca Buffaloes freshman girls basketball team beat West High fairly easy in nonleague action.
Manteca held West to single digit scoring in each of the four quarters.
Celina Burks led the Buffaloes (1-0) with nine points.
Manteca 46, Golden Valley 25
The Buffaloes freshman boys team cruised to an easy win over Golden Valley High 46-25 in the first round of the Lathrop Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament.
Javuan Dunn led the way for Manteca with 10 points.
Manteca (2-0) will play the winner of the Ceres-Lathrop contest at 5 p.m today.
