Galen Carroll is Modesto’s new police chief.

Carroll possesses more than 18 years of experience in law enforcement with the City of Long Beach where he most recently served as Police Commander of the North Patrol Division.  Carroll began his career as a Police Officer, advanced to Sergeant then Lieutenant and is currently a Commander.  Carroll’s wide variety of experience includes Field Training, Internal Affairs, Port Security, Administration, Field Support and Investigations.

“Galen stood out above the rest during the selection process,” said Modesto City Manager Greg Nyhoff. “He is well-grounded, has great integrity, intelligence and an all-around solid candidate. . .  I also believe his vision and leadership style will be a great fit for not only the Modesto Police Department, but the Modesto community as a whole.  Galen takes an active role in his current community by holding quarterly meetings to obtain feedback from citizens and businesses on the issues facing them, provides them with current crime trend information and gains their assistance in crime reduction – I look forward to him doing the same in Modesto.”

Carroll completed his Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership at Chapman University in Orange, CA and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.  In addition, he graduated the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy in Quantico, VA.

Carroll and his wife, Carlene, look forward to moving to the area to be closer to their family.

Carroll will be formally introduced to the Modesto City Council at their Dec. 11 meeting.  Carroll will assume the office of the Chief of Police on Jan. 8 with an annual salary of $175,000.  A swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled for a future date.
