The Ripon Indians girls basketball team continued action in the Liberty Ranch Tournament with an impressive 52-45 win over Capital Christian High Friday.

Ripon (6-0) remained perfect on the season behind a quality effort from senior guard Ruth Waters. Waters led all scorers with 21 points, including sinking 10-of-14 from the charity stripe.

“She had a lot of points from the free throw line which was a big bonus for us,” Ripon head coach George Contente said. “We’ve had other people score up to this point and now we are just sorting adding more to our team.”

The Indians have earned a berth in the tournament championship, setting up a 2:30 p.m. showdown with the winner of the Liberty Ranch-Linden matchup.

Ripon also got a strong showing from Kelsey Alexander, who finished with 12 points.

Now, the Indians find themselves one win from a tourney title and remaining undefeated on the season.

“We had some team goals and part of that was to try to make in to the championship game and win,” Contente said. “We need to improve on certain things that we have talked about as a team and we have.

“This was a good test for us; Capital Christian is a good team and that was nice for us to win this game.”

Stagg 51, Lathrop 40

The Lathrop Spartans had a solid first half, but after building a 10-point lead the Spartans would falter in a 51-40 loss to Stagg High Friday.

Lathrop led 20-10 at half, but a Stagg outburst in the third quarter would doom the Spartans. Stagg outscored Lathrop 21-5 in the pivotal third and the damage was done.

“Stagg started going to their post players and we were overmatched,” Lathrop head coach Ed Fang. “They were able to get the shots they wanted.

“We just weren’t able to match up physically.”

Lathrop (2-2) was led by Taylor Conley’s nine points.

The Spartans will be back on the court Tuesday when they host the Ripon Indians at 7 p.m.
